Barrington Night  “The Impact of Your Choice 3-12-08

The Barrington PTO had several speakers and played the film with a parent information segment.  It was so very sad to listen to all that has happened in Barrington and then hear about the RI families in the film.

The Barrington Police Chief spoke about new legislation that is targeting the people who make fake ID’s and the kids who use them.  He told parents to go home and check your child’s wallet and purse for a fake ID especially if you have a high school senior.  They are also targeting increased penalties for underage possession of alcohol and closing the loophole in the Social Host Law (consumption of alcohol anywhere on your property, not just in your house).

Barrington is planning to show the film to the high school students before the proms and to the 8th grade students.  The film producer believes that kids don’t think this can happen to them because they feel invincible, but they can see that it could happen to someone they care about.  She reiterated the information about brain development not being complete for mature decision making until 25 years or so.

We will discuss showing the film to students with Mr. Littlefield and Ms. Rawstron.   Parents should be aware that some students use substances after the prom and even after the postprom party.  Please let your teens what the consequences will be for their actions.  Remind them: call you anytime for a ride or if they or any of their friends is in trouble.
